Why Mirrors are a Great Design Option for Your Home

Mirrors are one of the most widely used decor items throughout homes today. By orienting them strategically, they can reflect sunlight and brighten your entire interior. If your home has trees overshadowing it, or rooms throughout it that appear boxed in and confined, mirrors are handy for projecting light into those darkened corners and creating spatial and textural illusions. Here are some ways in which mirrors can enhance the design of your home.

Capture and Project Light

By placing mirrors adjacent to windows, they magnify and distribute natural light extensively throughout a room. You can lean a large frame against a nearby wall to illuminate a darkened corner, or scatter smaller frames throughout a space to allow light to bounce throughout it.

Create Texture

Even a mirror with a basic frame will add an element of texture to any wall. But one of the best features of mirrors is that you can really get creative with texture through the different styles of frames. Today, you can find such a wide variety of styles, materials, and colours to choose from. If your décor leans toward a natural, rustic theme, imagine how well a rustic wooden frame can top of your design. No matter what your style or design is in your home, you can find a frame to elevate your interior – from sleek and elegant, to vintage and classic, or chic and modern. Adding in mirrors provides that three-dimensional texture to your layout.

Create the Illusion of Space

Beyond the factor of improved natural light, the illusion of space is one of the main reasons why mirrors have and continue to be one of the most popular décor items that have been used for so long. For example, by placing a mirror opposite a window in a small, unappealing room, you can improve the illusion of space and even add in more colour from reflections of nearby trees and plants from outside the window. The larger the mirror, the more space it will appear to create.

Create a Focal Point

Mirrors are also commonly used to create a focal point in a room. You can place a variety of smaller frames on a feature wall or lean a large frame above the mantelpiece to form a central point of focus which can tie the layout of a room together.

Mirrors are versatile and can suit any size, style, and space. If you’re in search of ways to enhance the design of your home, mirrors are one of the greatest tools to use. Contact M&T Glass to discuss design options – we are Ottawa’s mirror specialists!
