How to Handle a Smashed Window in Your Home

There’s no doubt that glass is a delicate material. When you’re left with a smashed window in your home, it can create much more havoc and stress than expected. That’s why we’ve created this quick How-To Guide to help you keep that stress at bay and tackle that smashed window quickly, and with ease. Here’s what to do if your window should ever break.

Keep Children and Pets Away

First and foremost is to block off the area so that any children or pets can’t access the surrounding glass. Place pets in a room and have children place shoes on. Don’t forget about protecting your own feet and hands as well!

Sweep and Vacuum

Cleaning it up is always the first step, but it’s important to take a moment to apply caution and be diligent with this process and wear gloves. Use a broom to remove the majority of the debris. If you have a durable vacuum, such as a shop vac, then use it to suck up any remaining smaller pieces that may not be visible to you.

If there are any sharp protruding edges remaining attached to the window, do not try to remove them – leave it to the experts.

Board it Up

Once the glass has been cleaned up and removed, it’s time to board it up until the repair can take place. You can head down to your local hardware store and buy plywood to put in place of the window. If it’s a smaller window that is off of the ground and out of reach from children or pets, you can also consider using other materials such as cardboard to cover it up until you can have it replaced.
